What Do They Do With All That Poo? by Jane Kurtz
A humorous look at the excrement of a dozen types of zoo animals with nuggets of information thrown in.

The Great Stink, by Colleen Paeff
This exploration of London's sanitation history touches on history, ecology, biography, and more. A brief account of London's waste-removal system from the 1500s to the 1800s provides context before the book introduces Joseph Bazalgette, the future father of sanitation. Bazalgette's journey is woven into the multiple cholera epidemics, the incorrect medical information, and the political challenges that defined the age.

Elephants Can Paint Too, by Katya Arnold
An elephant is depicted holding a brush at the end of the first book, a nod to the fact that elephants can learn to paint, and a group that live in Thailand were taught just that when the slowing of the logging industry prompted the need to find alternative sources of funding for elephant care.

The Grand View Cares Team is working to make our school a community of inclusivity, respect, and equity. To this end, a large wall decorated with the names of PTA donors was whitewashed in preparation for the installation of a more inclusive mural comprised of children's art. Over the weekend, the prepped wall was ruined with graffiti. This act of vandalism and hate is no match for the good that is in our school community. The wall has been whitewashed again and the work on the mural will continue as planned.
Parents may wish to view and discuss the picture book "Something Good" with their children this week.

When something bad is found on the wall in the girls' bathroom at school, an entire class must learn what it means for their community and that they are better than this. Healing begins when the children paint art on the wall. Teaching tips from the publisher​

Legend of Spud Murphy, by Eoin Colfer When their mother drops them off at the library several afternoons a week, nine-year-old William and his brother dread the overbearing librarian, but are surprised at what they discover. Chapter 5 of 5.

Misunderstood Shark, by Ame Dyckman
Shark interrupts the filming of "Underwater World with Bob," scattering the other creatures (and the audience), but he claims it is all a terrible misunderstanding --that he would never think of eating the fish, the squid, the audience ...or Bob.

Sharko and Hippo, by Elliot Kalan
Sharko and Hippo go fishing, but every time Sharko asks for something, Hippo pulls out something entirely different from his coat pockets, right up to the twisty ending that shows Hippo's apparent misunderstanding was planned all along. Hippo's style and characteristics are reminiscent of the comedy of Harpo Marx.

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919)
The Man Who Loved Libraries, by Andrew Larsen
Andrew Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835 and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1848. Helping to support his family, Carnegie worked in a cotton mill. Later he became a messenger boy and then a telegraph operator. Always a hard worker, Carnegie saved and invested his earnings. By age 35 he was a very rich man, and over his lifetime was able to fulfill his lifelong desire to give away half a billion dollars. Much of the money went to the building of more than 2,500 public libraries around the world. His philanthropy revolutionized public libraries, which were not widespread at that time.

I Just Ate My Friend, by Heidi McKinnon
Having eaten his only friend, a monster seeks a new companion but each creature he meets has a good reason not to serve as a replacement. We've all been there.

Do Not Lick This Book (It's Full of Germs), by Idan Ben-Barak and Julian Frost
Everything is full of germs, from your socks to the top of Mount Everest. The tour concludes with more formal introductions and profiles for E. coli, Streptococcus, and more. Science at its best: informative and gross.

Manhattan Beach Middle School eBooks Current MBUSD 5th graders will soon be able to check out eBooks using the MBMS digital library interface:

3  Click the Sora App link.
