Parker Looks Up, by Parker and Jessica Curry
This book is based on the viral photograph of two-year-old Parker Curry, who, during a visit to the National Portrait Gallery in the spring of 2018, became mesmerized by Amy Sherald's portrait of Michelle Obama. Sparkles and confetti show when Parker is spellbound, or she sees something that is inspiring to her. Attentive readers will notice that pieces of confetti match the colors from Michelle Obama's dress.

The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson. Though a fence segregates a pre-Civil Rights Era town, two girls find a way to overcome the separation and become playmates.

Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles. The friendship between two boys in 1964 underscores the bittersweet aftermath of the passage of the Civil Rights Act when, rather than opening swimming pools and other public spaces to African Americans, many towns and property owners boarded up the doors. The story ends with the promise of rights and freedoms yet to come.

When the Schools Shut Down, by Yolanda Gladden
In 1954, Yolanda Gladden was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, the same year that the Supreme Court handed down the Brown v. Board of Education decision, mandating the desegregation of schools. Yet in 1959, when Yolanda was old enough to begin her formal education, local authorities decided to close the county's schools rather than integrate them. Some in the Black community protested in the streets, while others organized schools to educate their children. Besides traditional subjects, Yolanda learned Black history in the basement of First Baptist Church. And in 1964, when the county was forced to reopen and desegregate its schools, she was well prepared academically and proud of her heritage. Spotlights an often-overlooked aspect of civil rights history.

Luli and the Language of Tea, by Andrea Wang
When ten children gather for play while their immigrant parents attend an ESL class, each child plays alone, since the children speak different languages, until one child has a plan to unite them over a word they all recognize.

Resource Author Andrea Wang's website (scroll down a ways) features a selection of audio files to hear how the word for tea is expressed in multiple languages. The samples are recorded by creators of children's literature for whom the language is a native or heritage language.

Deepen the Understanding
With younger students, talk about how both stories touch upon the theme of spreading one's wings. Literally, in Mel Fell because the bird is learning to fly. Figuratively, in Luli and the Language of Tea because the families in the story are starting new lives in a new country. With older students, see if they can find the common theme themselves through a post-reading discussion. They may make other connections, as well.
