The combined peak population of the Poston camps was over 17,000, mostly from Southern California. The camp was built on the Colorado Indian Reservation, over the objections of the Tribal Council. Background After Japan bombed Pear Harbor, Hawaii, in December 1941, Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in February 1942. The order led to the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans living on the West Coast for the duration of the the war.

My Dog Teny, by Yoshito Wayne, Osaki
The true story about a boy and his dog and the friendship that they shared during the time of the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans during World War II. Originally published in 2001 as an essay in a collection of short stories by eleven Japanese American writers about their experiences as children and youth during World War II: "From Our Side of the Fence."

Mr. Osaki
studied architecture at Berkeley after the War and designed stores, apartments, schools, and churches. In 1988, the U.S. Government apologized to the surviving internees from the camps. It admitted that the internment was due to racial prejudice, wartime paranoia, and poor leadership. The government also acknowledged that no Japanese American was ever found guilty of endangering the U.S. during World War II.

Write to Me, by Cynthia Grady
When young Japanese Americans were incarcerated with their families in harsh desert conditions, a San Diego children's librarian corresponded with many of them, sending books and art supplies. Clara Breed also wrote articles and letters agitating for justice for the prisoners.

When the Schools Shut Down, by Yolanda Gladden
In 1954, Yolanda Gladden was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, the same year that the Supreme Court handed down the Brown v. Board of Education decision, mandating the desegregation of schools. Yet in 1959, when Yolanda was old enough to begin her formal education, local authorities decided to close the county's schools rather than integrate them. Some in the Black community protested in the streets, while others organized schools to educate their children. Besides traditional subjects, Yolanda learned Black history in the basement of First Baptist Church. And in 1964, when the county was forced to reopen and desegregate its schools, she was well prepared academically and proud of her heritage. Spotlights an often-overlooked aspect of civil rights history.

Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, by Eric Kimmel

A resourceful traveler must use his wits to outsmart a pack of ghoulish goblins if he wishes to celebrate a bright and cheery Hanukkah.

Backstory Although what we know about Hershele Ostropolyer (1770?-1810 is based mostly on oral tradition and folklore, he was a real person, thought to have come from Balta, Ukraine. His name is based on the town of Ostropol in Poland where he served as a shohet (ritual slaughterer). According to legend, he lost his job because of his constant joking that offended some community leaders. He then wandered through Ukraine and eventually found his calling as a court jester, frequently mocking authority figures but delighting the common folk.
