American Library Association Youth Media Awards
Each year the American Library Association honors books, videos, and other outstanding materials for children and teens.
Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, the ALA Youth Media Awards, guide parents, educators, librarians, and others in selecting the best materials for youth.
​Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in the field of children’s and young adult literature and media.
Time and Place
The 2025 Youth Media Award announcements will take place Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, 8:00 a.m. Mountain Time in Phoenix, Arizona (7:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time). Follow live at

Crafty Connection Ideas Embellish a paper bookmark with a good for nothing button on it: use a hole puncher and a brad. Or, embellish a piece of bookmark-sized plastic craft mesh with a craft button attached with a chenille stem, and weave other pieces of stem into the mesh.

The author's family ties to Winnie-the-Pooh form the backbone of this story-within-a-story. In 1914 in Canada, veterinarian Harry Colebourn (the author's great-grandfather) sets off to join the war in Europe. A whistle-stop encounter with a gentle bear cub begins an historic friendship when the bear becomes the division's mascot and travels to England. Colebourn eventually takes Winnie to the London Zoo where Christopher Robin Milne meets her.

A story based on a true rescue traces the adventures of a duck family that is separated when the ducklings fall through the slats of the town's storm drain and are saved by three firemen who return them to their mother.

Sulwe, by Lupita Nyong'o
Nominated for the 2022 California Young Reader Medal, Sulwe did not go on to win the state award, but it was the favorite that year at Grand View.
In this powerful story about colorism and self-love, a young girl wishes for her dark skin to be lighter. The story is based on the real-life struggles actress Lupita Nyong'o faced growing up in Kenya as a dark-skinned girl. Ms. Nyong'o felt unbeautiful until dark-skinned model Alek Wek came on the international scene. "I couldn't believe someone who looked like me could be viewed as beautiful."
Besides her work as an an actress, writer, and producer, Ms. Nyong'o advocates for elephant conservation with WildAid.

This deeply moving story shares valuable lessons about fitting in, standing out, and the beauty of joyful acceptance. This is the first book written and illustrated by creator Vashti Harrison and the first time in the Caldecott history that its gold award has been presented to a Black woman.

This book/poem is a love letter to Black life in the United States. It highlights the trauma of slavery, the faith and fire of the civil rights movement, and the grit, passion, and perseverance of some of the world's greatest heroes.

Parker Looks Up, by Parker and Jessica Curry
Nominated for the 2023 California Young Reader Medal
This book is based on the viral photograph of two-year-old Parker Curry, who, during a visit to the National Portrait Gallery in the spring of 2018, became mesmerized by Amy Sherald's portrait of Michelle Obama. Sparkles and confetti show when Parker is spellbound. Attentive readers will notice that the pieces of confetti match the colors from Michelle Obama's dress.
