The author's family ties to Winnie-the-Pooh form the backbone of this story-within-a-story. In 1914 in Canada, veterinarian Harry Colebourn (the author's great-grandfather) sets off to join the war in Europe. A whistle-stop encounter with a gentle bear cub begins an historic friendship when the bear becomes the division's mascot and travels to England. Colebourn eventually takes Winnie to the London Zoo where Christopher Robin Milne meets her.

In this powerful story about colorism and self-love, a young girl wishes for her dark skin to be lighter. The story is based on the real-life struggles actress Lupita Nyong'o faced growing up in Kenya as a dark-skinned girl. Ms. Nyong'o felt unbeautiful until dark-skinned model Alek Wek came on the international scene. "I couldn't believe someone who looked like me could be viewed as beautiful."
Besides her work as an an actress, writer, and producer, Ms. Nyong'o advocates for elephant conservation with WildAid.

This book is based on the viral photograph of two-year-old Parker Curry, who, during a visit to the National Portrait Gallery in the spring of 2018, became mesmerized by Amy Sherald's portrait of Michelle Obama. Sparkles and confetti show when Parker is spellbound. Attentive readers will notice that the pieces of confetti match the colors from Michelle Obama's dress.
