The Tohoku region
Basho as painted by Buson

"The Narrow Road to the Deep North"
was written as Basho made an epic and dangerous journey on foot
through Edo Japan (the shogun era) of the late 17th century.
Basho's account of his travels
have since inspired many to follow in his footsteps,
tracing his journey for themselves.
In one of the most memorable passages, Basho suggests that
"Every day is a journey, and the journey itself home."
Poet and children's author Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) once suggested:
"It was as if the very soul of Japan itself had written it."
Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry consisting of
seventeen syllables in three lines in a five-seven-five pattern; they rarely
rhyme.
