Year-End Project - All Grades - Courage Cards for Children in Kenya
Courage in Action Grand View parent Jen Oliak will travel to Kenya this summer to help feed school children through a non-profit called Matanya's Hope. Matanya’s Hope provides resources to help thousands of children and their communities with clothing, shoes, school supplies, blankets, pillows, medical supplies, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, etc. The poverty in this area of Kenya is so great, it is hard for families to provide their children with food. Mrs. Oliak writes in her blog, Ounce of Salt, that parents often keep their children home from school to perform work, but the promise of food at school is increasing attendance. One cup of porridge costs about three cents. $1,400 will feed a school of 250 children for one year.
Library Activity While in Kenya to helping with the Porridge Program, Mrs. Oliak will deliver 700+ Courage Cards to the children made by our students. She has supplied us with colorful paper to decorate with drawings of soccer, school, friendship, flowers, or animals. Inside, students will write a message of courage such as Keep Your Dreams Alive, We Love You, Stay Strong, Believe In Yourself. They may also include a few lines about themselves such as their first name, age, why they like school, what they want to be when they grow up.

Look for words that fit your drawing. You will be surprised when they seem to emerge like magic from the object you have drawn. Lightly underline the selected words with pencil. When you are sure of them, box them in. And now you can draw freely, filling in the details of your object.

All Grades - Earth Week
Earth Day is an annual observance, held on April 22, to increase awareness of environmental issues. Millions of people worldwide gather to clean up litter, to protest threats to the environment, and to celebrate progress in reducing pollution. In 1969, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson suggested that a day of environmental education be held on college campuses. The following year, the lawyer and environmentalist Denis Hayes (then a recent graduate of Stanford University) led hundreds of students in organizing the observance of Earth Day on April 22, 1970. About 20 million people participated in this celebration. The event helped to alert people to the dangers of pollution and fostered a new environmental movement. Also in 1970, Congress created the Environmental Protection Agency to set and enforce pollution standards, and passed the Clean Air Act which limits the amount of air pollution that cars, utilities, and industries could release. Other environmental laws soon followed. (Hayes, Denis. "Earth Day." World Book Student. World Book, 2016. Web. 18 Apr. 2016.)

Paper Son: Lee's Journey to America by Helen Foster James and Virginia Shin-Mui Loh Though twelve-year-old Lee does not want to leave China, he has the responsibility for supporting his grandparents. He must emigrate to American as a "paper son" and live with a family in California listed on his documents as his own. He studies a "coaching book" to memorize the details of the California life he supposedly lives so to be able to dupe immigration officials. Detained on Angel Island, "the Ellis Island of the West," he and other Asian immigrants are treated like prisoners and fear deportation. In his heart, Lee knows he didn't want to come, but that he needs to stay. A complex story of home and heartbreak that is part of so many immigration experiences and not often told for this age.
Paired with Landed by Milly Lee Drawing of the reminiscences of her father-in-law, the author tells about a Chinese immigrant boy trying to join his father in America. As difficult as it is to leave the old country, entering the new one is hard. The family had to employ a tutor to help prepare Sun Lee to answer minute details about his home in China when interrogated for a month on Angel Island to prove he is his father's true son, and not a "paper son." Author Milly Lee was a beloved Grand View grandmother.

Week of December 19 - Track Santa Claus with NORAD
NORAD What began as the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) became The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in 1958 when the United States and Canada joined to take on the missions of aerospace warning, aerospace control, and maritime warning for North America. Aerospace warning includes the monitoring of man-made objects in space, and the detection, validation, and warning of attack against North America whether by aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles.
A Tradition Begins The tradition of tracking Santa began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement misprinted the telephone number for children to call Santa. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD hotline. The Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born.

Third Grade - Curriculum Connection: Reading for Information - Jane Goodall
Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell Little Jane loves her stuffed animal, a chimpanzee named Jubilee, and carries him everywhere she goes. Mainly, they go outdoors, where they watch birds building their nests and squirrels chasing each other. Jane reads about animals in books and keeps a notebook of sketches, information, and puzzles. Feeling her kinship with all of nature, she often climbs her favorite tree and reads about another Jane, Tarzan's Jane. She dreams that one day she, too, will live in the African jungle and help the animals. And one day, she does.
