CHECK OUTS HAVE ENDED FOR THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR
For Hybrid and Distance 1st-5th Grade Students
Until we can be together again in the shared library space, I am excited to offer contact-less book check outs to 1st-5th grade students (offer not available for TK/K students at this time). Here is how:
  • The student ID number will be needed to log in to the catalog
  • View this video (created by Mrs. Primm, Meadows Library Resource Specialist) that explains the hold process
  • The process is the same; select the Grand View library catalog when prompted rather than the Meadows library catalog
  • Place a hold on up to two books at a time
  • Requested books will be delivered to the classroom door ASAP
  • Distance students will be notified by email when requested books may be picked up from the front office
  • Return books to the front office during school hours
  • Returned books will be quarantined following American Library Association guidelines and cleaned before being checked out again
  • Questions? Email Heidi Snively at hsnively@mbusd.org

Sora Student Reading App

12/9/2020

Open a world of reading. Try Sora, the new reading app for MBUSD elementary students, by OverDrive. Read and listen on any device.
  • MBUSD elementary students and staff log in to the Manhattan Beach Unified School District portal using their mbusdapps email and password.
  • Do not enter Sora via the Manhattan Beach Middle School or the Redondo Beach USD portals, which may show as options the first time Sora is accessed.
  • Because Sora offers books for school age children up to and including the high school level, parents should monitor their child's use of this resource.

As of November 24, 2020, the fulfillment of library hold requests has been suspended. 4th and 5th grade students may continue to place hold requests through the online hold process as described below. The requests will be filled as soon as possible after winter break. Thank you for your patience.
Grand View Library began checking out books to 4th grade students Friday, 11/6, and will extend the service to 5th grade students Friday, 11/20. We will add more grade levels as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience. 5th grade students will be taught the hold process on 11/17 during their Library Zoom sessions. Here is a video explaining the hold process created by Mrs. Primm, the Library Resource Specialist at Meadows Elementary. The process is the same, just select the Grand View Library Catalog when prompted, rather than the Meadows Library Catalog.
  • Holds may be picked up every Friday from the bench by the GV front office, from 11:15am-12:30pm.
  • Face coverings must be worn. Maintain social distance.
  • Holds will be wrapped to maintain cleanliness and will have the student's name on them.
  • Books may be returned Monday-Friday to the Book Drop outside of the front office between 8:00am-1:00pm.
  • Returned books will be quarantined following American Library Association guidelines and cleaned before being checked out again.

MBUSD Protocol Helps to Flatten the Curve
Beginning March 16 all MBUSD students begin distance learning and school buildings are closed to the public. With Spring Break already scheduled for the week of April 6, the earliest date our schools are expected to re-open is Tuesday, April 14. UPDATE May 4 is the target date for staff to return. May 5 is the target date for students to return. UPDATE On April 15 the School Board declined to name an earliest date that school site could reopen and stated that distance learning protocols continue "indefinitely." The Board will revisit the discussion at the next meeting on May 6.
Explaining COVID-19 to Kids
News of the coronavirus is everywhere, and many adults are wondering how to discuss this topic in a way that will be reassuring and not make kids more worried than they already may be. Fortunately, there are some great resources to help at South Bay Families Connected.
The Importance of Following Social Distancing Protocols
Are your children asking why they may not get together with friends to play or do schoolwork over the next few weeks? This article from Medium helps to explain the importance of social distancing: Social Distancing: This is Not a Snow Day.
Online Access to the Library is Available 24/7
