Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles. The friendship between two boys in 1964 underscores the bittersweet aftermath of the passage of the Civil Rights Act when, rather than opening swimming pools and other public spaces to African Americans, many towns and property owners boarded up the doors. When the Schools Shut Down, by Yolanda Gladden
In 1954, Yolanda Gladden was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, the same year that the Supreme Court handed down the Brown v. Board of Education decision, mandating the desegregation of schools. Yet in 1959, when Yolanda was old enough to begin her formal education, local authorities decided to close the county's schools rather than integrate them. Some in the Black community protested in the streets, while others organized schools to educate their children. Besides traditional subjects, Yolanda learned Black history in the basement of First Baptist Church. And in 1964, when the county was forced to reopen and desegregate its schools, she was well prepared academically and proud of her heritage. Spotlights an often-overlooked aspect of civil rights history.

The Famous Speech On August 28, 1963, the "I Have a Dream" speech was delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The March was partly intended to show support for civil rights legislation proposed June 11th by President John F. Kennedy.

A Place to Land, by Barry Wittenstein
The backstory to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech paints a portrait of the struggle Dr. King had with finding just the right words, even up to the night before they were to be delivered, only to abandon the agonized-over speech in favor of improvisation, summoning "the passion of a Sunday morning sermon."

Spanish Is the Language of My Family, by Michael Genhart
As a boy prepares for his school’s Spanish spelling bee, he asks his grandmother for help with some of the words he doesn’t know how to spell yet. When she studies with him, she tells him how different things were back when she was a girl, when she had to speak only English in school to avoid punishment for speaking Spanish. This inspires him to study even harder and make his family proud. Based on stories the author heard as a child from his mother.

In 1968, Cesar Chavez led a boycott that resulted in a collective bargaining agreement guaranteeing field workers the right to unionize.

Harvesting Hope, by Kathleen Krull

When Cesar Chavez was 10 years old, drought forced his family to leave their Arizona ranch and move to California. The family became migrant workers, poorly paid and badly treated. As an adult, Chavez organized a nonviolent revolt culminating in a 300-mile protest march (March 1966) that produced the first farmworkers' contract. Cesar Chavez devoted his energies to other areas of social justice as well.
