Spanish Is the Language of My Family, by Michael Genhart
As a boy prepares for his school’s Spanish spelling bee, he asks his grandmother for help with some of the words he doesn’t know how to spell yet. When she studies with him, she tells him how different things were back when she was a girl, when she had to speak only English in school to avoid punishment for speaking Spanish. This inspires him to study even harder and make his family proud. Based on stories the author heard as a child from his mother.

Harvesting Hope, by Kathleen Krull

As an adult, Chavez organized a nonviolent revolt culminating in a 300-mile protest march (March 1966) that produced the first farmworkers' contract. Cesar Chavez devoted his energies to other areas of social justice as well.
