River of Words : the Story of William Carlos Williams, by Jen Bryant
This picture book biography of William Carlos Williams traces childhood events that lead him to become a doctor and a poet. Presented on Zoom; accessed via Epic.
Video The Canvas Williams and the artist Charles Demuth knew each other at university. I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold (1928) is one of a series of eight abstract portraits of friends, inspired by Gertrude Stein's word-portraits, that Demuth made between 1924 and 1929. This painting pays homage to a poem by William Carlos Williams and consists not of a physical likeness of Williams, but of an accumulation of images associated with him. Williams' poem The Great Figure describes the experience of seeing a red fire engine with the number 5 painted on it racing through the city streets.

Hidden Poetry Choose a page from a discarded book and rip it out neatly. Don't read the words on the page. Draw the outline of any object and then choose your words from within the object. Look for words that fit your drawing. You will be surprised when they seem to emerge like magic from the object you have drawn. Lightly underline the selected words with pencil. When you are sure of them, box them in. And now you can draw freely, filling in the details of your object.

Lillian's Right to Vote: a Celebration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, by Jonah Winter
An elderly woman stands at the bottom of a steep hill, determined to walk to the top to cast her vote. As she climbs she recalls significant people and events that have led her to this day: her great-great-grandparents being sold at a slave auction, her great-grandpa picking cotton, her uncle failing unfair voting registration tests, her parents being deterred from the polls, cross burnings, civil rights marches, and, finally, the signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. An afterword details the story's inspiration -- African American Lillian Allen, who voted in 2008 at age 100 -- and notes how the 1965 Voting Rights Act has been diminished by a 2013 Supreme Court decision.

The Losers Club, by Andrew Clements
There's no such thing as too much reading…until it gets you in trouble. Over the years Alec has been sent to the principal's office many times for reading instead of paying attention in class. As 6th grade starts, the principal gives Alec an ultimatum: stop reading when he should be listening or end up in summer school (which will destroy the annual family trip). Even worse, his parents will be spending longer hours at work, so he has to stay three extra hours in the Extended Day Program at school. According to EDP rules you either do homework in the library or you join a club. Happily, Alec learns he can start his own club, which he calls the Losers Club to scare kids away and ensure quiet reading time. His former best friend is now a popular kid who delights in tormenting Alec, especially when the boys realize they both like the same girl. Can Alec navigate the rough waters of sixth grade, keep his grades up, and, most importantly, read? Audio excerpt at TeachingBooks.net

A series of mishaps keeps Nell firmly at her aunt's side, until Nell herself becomes a key player in madcap investigations involving disguises and false identities. Nell and Kate solve one mystery after another, even successfully protecting the new president, Abraham Lincoln, from an early assassination attempt. Audio excerpt at TeachingBooks.net
