Living in a converted prison building and already suffering the early signs of lung disease, he managed to create a system of reading and writing for the blind that is still in use today.

Sergeant Reckless, by Patricia McCormick | Nominee 2 of 3
With every war comes stories of heroism. In this case, it's a little mare used to haul ammunition by U.S. soldiers during the Korean War. Though the marines had doubts about her ability to haul the heavy loads, they began her training. It quickly became apparent that not only did Reckless have a large heart, she'd also consume anything-including chocolate, Coca-Cola, and poker chips.

The Day You Begin, by Jacqueline Woodson | Nominee 1 of 5
There will be times when we feel as if we don't fit in, and that can feel uncomfortable. When we reach out and take that first step to get to know someone else, that tiny but mighty brave spark of confidence can lead to inclusion and real friendship. Finding the courage to share your story can connect you to others.
Video The Day You Begin presented by author Jacqueline Woodson.
Making Deeper Connections Note the images of rulers in the story and discuss the way we measure ourselves and others. Interestingly, RULER is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence found on resilienteducator.com:
  • Recognizing emotions in oneself and others
  • Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
  • Labeling emotions with a nuanced vocabulary
  • Expressing emotions in accordance with cultural norms and social context
  • Regulating emotions with helpful strategies

Little Jane loves her stuffed animal, a chimpanzee named Jubilee, and carries him everywhere she goes. Feeling her kinship with all of nature, she often climbs her favorite tree and reads about another Jane, Tarzan's Jane. She dreams that one day she, too, will live in the African jungle and help the animals. And one day, she does.
