Samuel Morse, that's Who! The Story of the Telegraph and Morse Code, by Tracy Nelson Maurer
Samuel Morse was not an instant success. He wanted to be a painter, but when his career in America didn't take off, he sailed to England in 1829 to study. People still did not seem to get his art when he returned, but they were very interested in the electromagnetic system to carry coded messages that he had designed on the voyage home. It took trial and error, but eventually Morse invented Morse code (later modified and renamed International Morse Code) and the telegraph machine. News that once had taken months to reach it's destination now could travel in the blink of an eye.
